Shooting kitesurfing is challenging: sun, sea, sand and a kiteboarder approaching at speed. It is essential to get up close and personal to capture the action, which happens very fast. The 10 fps Canon EOS 1D Mk III with a 16-35mm f2.8 L in a Eva Marine bag is great for pro riders, who have to be good enough to jump a couple of metres away! For other riders the longer 24-70 f2.8L increases the subject distance and safety margin. A 300mm super telephoto is great for shore based long shots and can be doubled up to 600mm as needed. It takes a special rider to perform great tricks repeatedly and look straight down the lens to get the perfect shot. Two ladies who excel at this are multiple world champion Kristin Boese and the 2010 European freestyle champion Celine Collaud. El Gouna provides a spectacular backdrop against which to shoot and the light conditions and colours are amazing. |
